Hurray for Hershey.
And I wasn't here Wednesday, hurray for Delgrosso's.

So.
I didn't watch dirty jobs. (:

Bird food and Spider Pharm

Want to make the healthiest bird food possible? Or maybe extract the venom from Black Widows, Tarantellas, or Scorpions? Here’s how.

In order to make top-of-the-line bird feed, you need a few simple ingredients, a metric ton of fat, Dehydrated Larva and Pupa, and some deep-fried maggots. The fat is added to a large tub which it will melt and remain at a temperature around 140° then the larva is added to the hot, melted fat and the mixture is cooled into a giant block of 82% fat, 90% protein and a whole lot of bugs.

Or, if you feel a little bulls crick, take a few live maggots, around twenty-five thousand, and scald them to death, stick them in a washer and you’ll get some grade A quality bird feed.

Milking cows is easy, but try milking a spider. Some spiders are easier then others, all you have to do to milk Tarantella is give it a small dose of nerve gas to put it to sleep, then use a tube to suck up the venom it excretes, after a small charge of electric shock to its venom ducts.

Black Widows, not so easy, not only is it because their small, but they like to fidget and move, so another small dose of gas is used. Then the hard part is getting the hose, which sucks up the milk, positioned over its fangs and not its mouth.

Scorpions have to be the easiest, just roll them onto their back, place a small diskette on their stomachs to keep them from getting away, and squeeze the tip of their tails into the suction hose and it’ll do the rest.

Bird Food

On Dirty jobs, Mike Rowe went to Idaho where he discovered a healthy bird food that is being made every day. It is made in a very unique way and considered to be one of the best food to feed to a bird. So if you want your bird to have some awesome go to Idaho and get this amazing bird food. This bird food contains 18% protein and it contains 82% fat mixed with insects. This food is also combined with flys with some more fat. There are also kidneys contained in this bird food because of it high protein.

This bird food has to be cooked to oil form, so that it can be processed further. After it is cooked to the oil form it is put on a grill to blend the mix. After it is grilled it is put in a box that weighs 1500 lbs that contains mostly fat. It must be then cooked again but in liquid form, it then takes 3 days to get to its finished form. After that it is ready for the birds to eat. Birds love this food as it is very healthy for them.

Spider Milk

On Dirty Jobs, Mike Rowe discovered a very long, hard, and demanding job. What is this Job? It is Milking Spiders! That's right, Milking Spiders!!! Mike soon found out what kind of job it was. It demands a lot on a working class person, in fact it requires 7 days a week to complete the task of capturing spiders and milking them. It a hard and strenuous job that requires extreme patience while actually milking the spiders.
One of the most common spiders that are captured for milk is the Black Widow spider because of its poison has a narcotic reaction. Milking the spiders takes a lot of patience to complete the task. Spider milk is beneficial to humans as it can be used to cure diabetes. Now, before the spiders are ready to be milked they have to be fed their supper which consists of homegrown maggots. After they eat the maggots, they are now ready to produce the venom to make the milk. It is very difficult to milk the spiders as a microscope is needed to see the fangs that extracts the milk from the spiders. After the spider has produced the milk it can stay fresh up to 30 days later.

This concludes on how spiders are captured and milked. As you can see it is a interesting "Dirty Job" that is extremely difficult.

Dirty Jobs

Bird food is made of fat with insects in it. Sewet is healthy for birds and people feed it to birds because they love birds. It costs three times as much as regular bird food because it costs more to make.
The flies in the sewet are home grown and raised for the explicit purpose of feeding birds nutritious food. To grow the insects they keep them in the factory. In order to prepare the maggots to be put in the bird feed they scold them with boiling water to humanely put them to death quickly. They then stir the maggots with the liquefied fat and put it in a cube mold. After it sets up they take the large cube cut it down to packaging size to sell it.
Spider catching is a difficult job that requires a lot of work. First the hunters have to find a location where spiders might hide such as a pack rat’s nest. They then methodically remove pieces of the nest and carefully catch spiders from under rocks and twigs.
After they finish catching all the spiders they can they attempt to put the nest back together. Then they take the spiders back home and put them in their permanent homes. They remove each spider from the catching cup and put it in a cup so it can be fed home made maggots at least once a week.
In order to keep the spiders sustained they breed fruit flies, maggots, and houseflies. They feed those to the spiders so the spiders produce venom. They milk the spiders by anesthetizing the spiders then inducing them to release the venom into a vile. They use the venom to research diseases and produce anti venom for those spiders.

Yuck.

This show was disgusting. Mike is crazy for even doing the things he does.
To create the birdseed, they cleaned the tank in which the fat will be melted. It doesn't happen overnight, more like a few days. It's gross, but the birds love it. While waiting for it to melt, they create the molds that will be later filled to make the birdseed.
When that's all finished, they mix a few things like bugs, the melted fat, and other food together and pour it into the molds. After that's all done, they will cut and package the birdseed to be sold.

Milking spiders was the most disgusting thing on the show. Spiders are gross, and should be killedddd, but their venom is used for medical purposes, so kill them, and steal their venom. To find the spiders, look in the desert. Black widows and Brown Recluse spiders are the ones you want. Hopefully, you won't get bitten and die.
Feed the spiders maggots and rabbit poop. Blah! Black widows get smaller maggots and Tarantulas eat crickets. When they are fed, they put them to sleep in order to collect the venom.
When they are sleeping, they are easier to handle. They place tubes over their fangs, and shock the spiders to release the venom. The Black Widow needs a microscope to collect the venom. About 500 Black Widows are needed to produce 1 drop of venom. When it's all collected, it's stored in a refrigerator to keep it fresh.

man vs. food....could you do it?

On man vs. food I’ve seen two uses for maggots; one was with maggots and other nutrients are fed to birds and also are fed to spiders and other venomous insects. Birds are not always fed the nutrients they need. They go through a process where they kill maggots and put it with the fat that they have rendered. They put them in aluminum walls that are shaped like squares with holes on the top and bottom. They have plastic and other things that lay under the aluminum walls so the birds’ food doesn’t leak when it hardens.

There bird food is more expensive then most because of how much nutrients is in the food.costumers complain about the pricing. also the bird food comes in 2 different packets.the food contains maggots, and fats that they render. the food gets compacted and harden into a square.

The couple that collects spiders and other venomous insects gets the insects venom and use it for research (they milk the insects lol). When they collect venom from a widow spider they milk a lot of widows. The guy has been bitten over a thousand times but that’s only because he plays with them. The scorpions are easier to get venom out of because they have a tail. They use a lid and tweezers to keep the scorpion from moving.

The couple feed the spiders maggots but before they feed the spiders they put them in a bag. then put them in hot/warm water and that kills them faster. they raise regular house fly's and also fruit fly's. they even have grasshoppers that they feed to different species. when your in a fruit fly place where there are millions of them in one room never open your mouth or just get out before you have a fly flying in your insides lol.

Some people even eat the maggots alive. Some people use it as a cocktail dish. Also venomous species use their venom for protection but we use it for finding solutions to diseases that could possibly be cured by venom. Venom is helping with diseases as we find the technology to use the venom for. I don't how people do this but they do; are you able to live with what they do?

Dirty Jobs

Mike Rowe Takes on Birdseed Making and Spider Milking.

You have seen Mike do some nasty jobs such as removing toilets from buildings. He now finds a couple jobs like learning to make birdseed from fat and milking some of the most dangerous spiders. Also, he learns to milk scorpions. Sounds like he is having fun, but a job such as milking spiders can be dangerous.

Bird Seeds

On Dirty Jobs, Mike Rowe learns how to make birdseed two ways: one with flies and the other maggots. Before making the birdseed, you need to clean out the tank that will liquefy the fat. Removing the fat that didn’t get liquefied can be used again and again. Most birdseed is not made with fat, but the birds sure do love it. Next, you get a bowl and mix the flies and the grounded peanuts together. After you are done doing so, then you put the mixed flies and grounded peanuts into the mold before putting the liquefied fat in. Note, the mold can be any shape you want. Then, you wait for half an hour for the birdseed to form inside the mold in a cold room. If the outside is even colder, then the food might be ready at a quicker rate.

Once the molding is done, you have to get it out. First off, you need to flip the whole thing upside-down onto a tray. Next, you get a torch and heat up the outside of the mold, which will help get the birdseed out. After heating the outside, the mold is ready to come off. It should come off really easy; if not, use a towel to remove the mold. All you have to do now is package it. Watch your fingers though. A mold with birdseed can weigh at least seventy lbs.

Milking Spiders

On Dirty Jobs, Mike discovered a couple that went out into the desert seven days a week, 365 days a year to catch spiders and milk them. This couple catches Black Widows for an example. They even milk scorpions, which are easier to milk than spiders. Milking for venom may sound dangerous, but it has a benefit. Scientists find that venom can be used for diabetes. First, you need to catch a spider. The best place would be the desert or a home with one too many spider webs. To catch a spider, you need a small container, tweezers, a picket, and a first aid kit, just in case a spider bites you. More than likely you will get bit. So be careful when catching one.

Next, you need to feed the spiders. Feeding the spiders takes a while for the scientists to do. Scientists normally catch about 50,000 spiders/scorpions for their venom. Each spider does get fed or they die and that means no venom from that spider. The smaller spiders get the housefly to eat and the bigger spiders get the fruit fly. Tarantulas get the crickets because these huge spiders need to eat. Each spider gets at least five flies and each tarantula get five crickets. Sounds like a little to us, but to the spider it is a perfect meal.

Once their supper is over, it is time to milk the spiders. Yes, milk them. You get a vial, which holds the venom, and the tweezers, for milking the fangs. First, you give the spiders a gas that will knock them out, not kill them. Then you use the tweezers and start milking the spiders. The Black Widow has very small fangs, so you have to use a microscope to see them. A scorpion does not need to be knocked out because its stinger is at the back of its body. Put a lid over the body and start milking the scorpion. You can store the venom in a fridge and it will stay fresh for thirty days.

Dirty Jobs

Bird Food

Every living creature needs to eat food. With forests being cut down for human uses, bird habitats are disappearing and feeding birds with bird feeders in backyards is becoming popular. But how is bird food made? What is it made from? Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs found a couple that makes high quality bird food.

The first step in making this high quality bird food is cleaning out the tank that they will melt the fat in. Using shovels, they scoop out the left over fat from the tank. When it is all cleaned out, they put fresh fat in it. It’s beef kidney knobs. This fat surrounds the kidneys in cows. It has a high nutritional content and will provide the birds with insulating fat. They put about 1500 pounds of fat into the tank and it takes a few days to melt it all down into an oil. Then they head down to a center where they make the bird food. They have to set up molds that the bird food mixture will eventually go in. These molds have a wooden base covered in felt with a layer of plastic wrap over top. Then on top of this base they put a square metal box. The bird food mixture will eventually be poured in it. Freeze-dried flies, peanuts, the oils from the fat, and other ingredients are poured into the container and stirred together. The mix will then sit to get hard and then be cut into proper sizes for labeling and packaging. But what about bird snacks? The couple showed Mike how to make those too. Larva are scalded to death and mixed with other nutritional ingredients and then dried in a clothes-drying machine. The result is a crunchy, healthy bird treat.

Spider Pharm

When most people see spiders in their home, their instincts are to either run from it or kill it with something. But in Arizona, Mike Rowe found a couple that actually go out looking for spiders to bring into their home. Their intent is to milk the spiders for their venom. Scientists use the venom for its medicinal qualities. It can be used for cures of many diseases including diabetes.

Collecting the spiders is their first task. A good place to find many spiders is in the home of a pack rat. A pack rat is a rather large rat that lives in a den it creates for itself. They carefully take apart the den and pick up the spiders they can find including Black Widows and Brown Recluse spiders. They put these spiders in little containers to take back to their home where they will store them in a bigger container.

Then it’s dinnertime for the spiders. The couple feed their spiders fresh homegrown maggots. Despite the wretched stench the maggots excrete when they are eating, the couple must collect them. They feed the maggots with rabbit poop. Tiny fruit fly maggots will be fed to the small Black Widow spiders. Each spider receives about five to ten maggots each. The Tarantulas are fed with crickets.

When all the spiders have been fed, it’s time to collect the venom. To ensure the safety of the person collecting the venom, the spiders are given a gas that puts them into a twilight state. They are not as aggressive and are easier to handle. Then the fangs are placed in a tube and a small electric current shocks the spider so they excrete their venom. The bigger the spider, the easier it is to collect the venom. The Black Widow has tiny fangs, and it is very difficult to collect its venom. They are so small that a microscope is needed to do the job. It takes about 500 Black Widows to get one drop of venom, but it is extremely poisonous. The collected venom is stored in a refrigerator so it stays fresh. Spider pharms aren’t any kind of ordinary farm.

Dirty Jobs (June 1, 2010)

The first part of Dirty Jobs was about healthy birdfood. The people that Mike visited actually cared about what their birds were eating. That is how they decided to make a more healthy bird food.It is a long and tedious process.
There was a lot of odd ingredients that went into the bird food. One ingredient they put in was maggots. But they had to kill them. The people killed them humanely. They killed them like you would a crab. They scalded them. Mike tried one of them. He said it popped it his mouth. Oh yummy. The guy that was scalded them said that they were kinda like pomegranate seeds.
To get the maggots for the bird food , they had to create an environment for them. To create the environment, they had to create a make shift cow dropping. A thing I learned about maggots is that they secrete an ammonia to keep they food from spoiling.
while watching dirty jobs, i learned that you can milk a spider. i never thought that was possible but i was proved wrong. i also learned that to milk the spiders, you have to give the spiders anestesia. but when milking scorpions, you do not. While milking the black widow, you have to be very careful how you pick it up with tweezers because if you pick it up the wrong way, you can squish the spider.
Before you can milk a spider or scorpion, you have to catch.they usually live in cacti in the desert. but when looking for them in cacti, you have to be careful of the packrat that lives in the cactus. Also, when milking these dangerous animals, you usually don't get very much out of these little creatures.
